Kinematic bodies tearing through soft bodies

In my app, I have something like a cloth setup from the demo, in mid-air. Its anchored (mass=0) by some points around its periphery(e.g. 4 corner points and a few more along each side).

The problem is that when I manually move my kinematic body, along say a line perpendicular to the cloth plane, I get the deformation of the cloth fine. But after deforming a bit, moving/prodding the kinematic body further, makes the it go through.This is not tunneling though (I think)

I have tried all possible things: changing stiffness to very low values, friction, kinematic contact hardness, etc, etc. Infact, I don't think the stiffness coefficients actually have any bearing upon at what point I get the tear. I certainly don't want it deformed like crazy but certainly much more than what I can achieve right now, like a balloon's material.

I am not using pose matching. I am using motion state for updating the kinematic body.

Any ideas?
