Erwin, did you say you no longer had access to your account to maintain the IRC channel? You can get the password reset and sent via email, ask the admins in #freenode. It'd be good to assign some ops and get a topic up, etc. Also there is currently the risk of spammers / troublemakers causing a problem and no ops to get rid of them.
There is sporadic daily conversation in there now, more people should at least idle in the channel. IRC is a brilliant way to encourage a better community for an open source project, and share knowledge/ideas to an extent which just isn't possible on forums.
